Are you familiar with fifth wheels? If you are not, you may not be quite sure where the fifth "wheel" fits on this towable RV. Fifth wheels are a specialized type of RV with a hitch that fits in a large mount shaped like a wheel that is secured in the back of a truck. The front of the trailer extends out above and over the hitch. This extra space, which is often used for a sleeping or storage area, is what sets fifth wheels apart from other towable recreational vehicles. Here are some other particulars about them:Size: They average anywhere from 20 to 40 feet long. Many also have slide outs that increase the living space when you are parked at a campground or other rest area.Features: Fifth wheels vary greatly in features depending on the size and the price. The most basic models will have a small kitchen area with a sink, a refrigerator and a small cook top. They will also have a bathroom area with a toilet and a shower. There may be one or two sleeping areas or possibly a pull out sleeper in a couch or loveseat. The larger more expensive fifth wheels will have more elaborate kitchens with larger appliances, a larger bathroom area which may have a tub, and even a sitting area. They may also have an entertainment system with a TV, DVD player, and a stereo.The Cost: The most basic fifth wheels start at well below $40,000 and might be perfect for those weekends out hunting or fishing with the guys. The more luxurious models can range anywhere up to nearly $100,000. These fifth wheels might be appealing for those who do a lot of travel and spend more time on the road. It would be more like a "home away from home" than the more basic models. With slide outs included they can be quite spacious as well.Construction: The basic fifth wheels are made with a steel and wood frame with corrugated aluminum siding. As you get more expensive you begin to see fiberglass frames and better insulation.Towing: You will need to have a truck that is capable of being fitted with a hitch mount and also is capable of towing the weight of the RV when it is fully loaded.This type of towable is a great way to get into the recreational vehicle market and lifestyle without spending a lot of money.
