With gas prices constantly rising, the days of cheap motoring are fast disappearing. There are some simple things that you can do to reduce your gas usage. This is good for the health of your wallet and as a sideline it is also good for the health of the planet! Give these a try and you will soon notice the difference.1. Drive consistently – Constant changes of speed and erratic driving use more gas. Try and look ahead for traffic signals and other hold ups and adjust your speed gradually so that you don't have to come to a stop and then start up building your speed again.2. Check your tyre pressures – Under inflated tyres cause extra friction between your vehicle and the road and will quite drastically increase your fuel consumption, especially on longer trips. When was the last time your tyre pressures were checked?3. Remove Roof Racks – And 'Ski bars', roof mounted luggage boxes etc. if you are not actually using them. They cause extra drag in the wind and increase your gas consumption. Look around and you see people with ski bars still fitted in the summer! – They are costing money!4. Switch off the Air Con! (Whenever possible !) – Running an air conditioning unit in your vehicle eats up about 15% of your gas consumption! Do you really need it on? A lot of people just leave it on all of the time5. Slow Down! – Your vehicle is most fuel efficient at it's optimum cruising speed. When you go above this you start eating more gas at an exponential rate!6. Don't Use the car! – Do you really need to drive to wherever you are going. Can you use public transport.(Especially in Urban areas where there are buses/metro etc. Or even walk! – you will save money and get fitter at the same time! Consider setting up a car sharing pool with work colleagues for commuting or other mothers for the school run.7. Change your car – If your car is a gas guzzler, consider changing it for a smaller engined model that uses much less fuel, when you are next due to renew it. The maximum normal engine size in Europe is about 2 litres – the reason for that is gas is expensive!8. Close the windows - especially when travelling at speed. All that wind blowing through causes drag and uses extra fuel.9. Have your car regularly serviced. An engine that is not running efficiently due to old plugs etc will use much more fuel.10. Remove excess weight! Clear all that junk that you are carrying around in the trunk! It all uses more gas to haul it around with you!John Roberts is a Freelance Training Consultant /Trainer in the UK.
